02 transmitter technology 2g & 3g switching

David Cameron was having problems receiving phone signals in a weak phone signal area. I also in Corsham have had similar problems. I thought it was a weak or no reception area. I have found a trick. I go to the settings area and switch it to 2g only. This gives me a phone signal almost anywhere. 3g only can also work. I was out in the UAE recently and I was talking to a technical person. He said it was not my phone but a fault with the way o2 transmit the signal. The transmitter confuses the phone in weak reception areas. This brings me along to an area I have been checking out recently. I have found that mobile phone companies are starting to upgrade the masts to help phones find signals in weak reception areas. Does anybody have any information about this problem at o2 as it affects us all?

Hi Dougy

One of the pieces of advice we gave if issues arose with signal was to try switching to 2G in the phones settings to see if that improved the situation. Of course the downside is internet connection at a snails pace while on 2G. 😞

And then O2 started removing this toggle when a person upgraded to a 4G tariff. They are now starting to re introduce the option to turn off 3G.

I'm using an iPhone 5s on 4G Payg and am still waiting for the 3G toggle to be re introduced. 😞

It's encouraging that some networks are integrating wifi calls into their systems to help in weak / black spot areas.

O2 has Tugo but this comes with issues /glitches for some and it's not available to Payg or business customers or on the Mac 😞

Apple is introducing this feature in their next iOS 8 update so I'll see if O2 allow this spec.

I'm lucky to be in a strong area for signal and understand lots of people are looking forward to the network future promise and improvements in signal.

Often advised to do so in weak signal areas and is especially useful when indoors for some users as explained by adamtemp64 in this thread http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Pay-Monthly-and-Pay-Go/Do-you-have-poor-coverage-signal-Indoors-This-ma...
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

This does not address the problem with o2s transmitters. I have read recently that the transmitters are at fault not the phones. You could have the latest expensive new phone but it still will strugle to find and hold a signal in weak areas. There is newer technology been installed at some existing mobile phone masts that help phones switch and hold signals in weak reception areas. Phones get so confused when they find weak 2g and 3g signals that it gives you a not spot, when there is clearly a signal. This is technical stuff. Highly qualified Transmitter engineers know about it. If I find the mobile phone operator that is implementing this upgrade first I will let you all know.
