O2 refresh cancellation + airtime payment

Hi guya, I have a question.
I took out a pay monthly contract on 5th April and received the phone on the 6th.

I cancelled the contract today and paid for the device in full, but have been told I need to pay the first months airtime. I'm within the 14 day period, and haven't used any calls texts or data? Why is that the case? As far as I'm aware I shouldn't have to make this payment.

@AA1 You have to give 30 days notice regardless. Please read my guide here.

Yes, absolutely correct.
Min 30 days notice is required to cancel the airtime.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Lumia 950 Dual (O2 & Sfr) and Z3 Tablet (Three UK)
iPhone7 (EE)

nil desperandum. When you take things for granted, the things you are granted, are taken away.

I hope you got the phone for a price that was better than just buying it sim free @AA1. Otherwise you pretty much shot yourself in the foot.

Re: O2 refresh cancellation + airtime payment

If it had been a change of mind within 14 days and you cancelled and returned the phone,  you would just have to pay for any usage.

However, you didn't change your mind and by keeping the phone, you are deemed to have accepted the terms of the contract.  It then became a contract cancellation for which you need to give 30 days notice.
