I visited the o2 store in Cambridge on the 15th July where a lady told me to put another 20 pound onto my Pay as you Go SIM which would automatically kick in once my data expired. It did not and now I do not have enough on my account for it to renew tomorrow as it charged me for additional data rather than renewing

Your allowances only renew on your anniversary date, not before.
Data use prior will come out of credit.
