thank you @Bambino , I havn't heard of Captcha before, so now I know what the mixed up letters & numbers are called. I personally I have no problem with them on my laptop - as Cleoriff says it must be the female brain tee hee hee

I read somewhere once, captchas were developed not only as a way of proving you are a human, but also as a way of verifying words being digitally stored from old transcripts.
Sometimes the digital reader would come across a word it did not know and would send it off for verification. Which is why on the original captchas it would show a "common" word and also one of the unverified ones.
The common word was proof you were human and the odd word was then verified once so many people entered the same response.
