Hi I was looking to see if anyone knows if you get phone cover/insurance for the length of your contract or they only offer the one you have to pay extra for. I was told that you can only get cover for 12 months with an iphone but not sure if that's if the phone brakes down or if its damaged. Want to know if it any different for the new windows phone which I'm looking to upgrade to. Any ideas and advice? I would be very grateful.

The warranty will cover a phone for 2 years, unless it is an iPhone in which case it is only 12 months. The warranty is for if there are any manufacturing faults with the phone and you don't have to pay for this - it is lawfully included with the purchase.
Insurance is what you pay extra for - the price varies but with a Windows Phone I think O2 do it for £10 per month. This is in case your phone is lost, stolen or accidentally damaged (such as you dropping it).
