No longer Cloud

"From 1 February 2012 The Cloud wifi won't be part of your unlimited wifi anymore. You can still use BT Openzone as usual. Go to o2.co.uk/wifichanges to make sure you are ready."
Today I got the above message on my O2 HTC Desire. Not sure I fully understand its implications.
I think I am already registered with Cloud; wifi works in Wetherspoon pubs, when they broadcast a decent signal in my part of the pub;-)
Never been able to get BT Openzone; can I force O2 to connect me following that message.
Why should I get adverts from O2 when I am paying O2 for my contract?

Re: No longer Cloud

Nearly everywhere I go it is the cloud rather than BT Openzone. That's not good news at all.

Re: No longer Cloud

I think there's more to it than o2 just ditching The Cloud because they'll soon have far more hotspots from them. Sky bought The Cloud...perhaps they're relaunching the service as their own and don't want o2 to be part of it? Also, I'd imagine getting an o2 mobile with Sky wifi would sound odd seeing as Sky is a competitor for land lines/broadband. What a muddle.
Anyway, they certainly will have lots of hotspots very soon. They're already in every Tesco Extra, branded Tesco Wifi, unlimited use as long as you're a Clubcard holder.
With regards to paying for the unlimited wifi bolt on which is actually just included as part of many tariffs (some may be paying about £7.50), well, you're still getting unlimited use of BT Openzone which if you were to buy directly from BT would cost £15 per month with an 18 month contract or £39 per month for 30 days. Also, for all iPhone users on tariffs and quite possibly those on smartphone tariffs too pre June 2010...
The Wi-Fi and Web Bolt On is included at no extra cost for customers connecting or upgrading to any iPhone tariff until further notice. O2 reserves the right to withdraw or amend this offer at any time on reasonable notice.

Re: No longer Cloud

I am sure this has got to do with Sky - remember how they treated Virgin, wanting to charge more than was commercially viable for Virgin to carry their channels - all to move people over to Sky
Unfortunately O2 Wifi is not delivering the 'thousands by the end of the year,' first promised in their press release. My home town of Liverpool has 2 outside of O2 stores -all city centre - and I am about to loose 6 local pubs and restaurants with the closure of The Cloud (Plus the Airport)

Re: No longer Cloud

Even though o2 are not providng the cloud, if you register with them after like at mcdonalds then the free publing the clouds you still get to use for free.
so if your pub or restraunt say free wifi via the cloud, as long as you have registered then you still get to use the service for free.
Its just not as automated as o2 the cloud, when you connect it asks you for your email / user name and password and thats it and as most places offer wifi for free its not too bad.
Ive used Tescos wifi in my local store and it was great. So thumbs up for Tescos on free wifi. :smileyvery-happy:

Re: No longer Cloud

Hi
I'm guessing that Cloud have lots of sights but I don't think I have ever used them with my iPhone contract. Maybe its just the places that I have tried to use public wifi but there seam to be way more BT open zones sites.
However a few days ago I was in Starbucks in Canterbury and it was quicker to use 3G rather than the BT Openzone wifi.

I pay £5 per month for my bolt-on. As I said I cannot get BT Openzone on my Desire; or I have failed to do so, so far. When I called in at an O2 shop I was told that BT Openzone was not available.
It seems there is no where/one who can sort out whether or not BT Openzone is available. Shop says one thing and message says another!!

Re: No longer Cloud

BT Openzone is available, but you have to use their public sites.
BT have Openzone (FON) for their broadband customers and Openzone for business.

Re: No longer Cloud

Hi
I am on the o2 smartphone tarrif with my N8 and have never been able to connect to a openzone hotspot (openzone not Fon) I was told BT had ended the openzone contract with o2 ( I was told that by o2).
So how are we supposed to connect to openzone when there is o contract to do so.
