iPhone 6 nano sim

I've received my iphone 6 and new nano sim which I've put into the phone. Do I have to activate the sim? I was told to just put it in and it would just update to my network.

As per the link above, you need to activate the new sim cards by completing this http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/

Contact O2 Customer Services so they can check your new account or to check any porting if you've moved from another network.

Contact O2.

Im confused ... easily done I'll admit, but I'm still confused. Have taken delivery of my new iphone 6. Had an old iphone 4s and want to keep the number. Wife will take on the 4s. Have sim swapped the phones to keep my old number. 4s went 'No Service' after 2 hours, but new iphone 6 is still 'No Service' some 14 hours later. Is that to be expected? Do i just wait now? I kind of expected the phones to swap at the same time ...
