got a voicemail the otherday (did`nt even know it was on)  now I cannot get rid of the icon in top left corner and every time i open phone its there!!!  very annoying... grrr

Leave yourself a voivemail, listen to it and then delete it. That should sort it for you.

When you go through the voicemail options it is usually a case of pressing 3 to delete...

Turning voicemail off may help too.
Just dial 1760.
Dial 1750 if you want it back on again.

Yeah, if had this a few times. It happens when you hang up to quickly (or it did in my case) before the IVR confirms the message was deleted. If you have deleted the message follow what @jonsie said to clear the icon.
