Z10 BIS Data

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello,

Okay so before the Z10 was released, we had traditional BIS for our BlackBerry phones. When your data ran out, you could still use the BIS services like BBM, etc. Althought the internet browser became very slow, presumably to indicate that you did not have any data left for that. My concern now is that since we no longer have BIS on the Z10, does that mean you get shut off completely when your normal o2 data runs out? Has anyone experienced this?

Yes, that is correct. Once your data is used up it shuts off everything data connected until the next months bill cycle.

As it uses the normal data bolt on that would tend to point that you would have no service once your data allowance is used for the month. I don't see how an exceptence could be factored in.

I realise that, I'm just asking if they've included some kind of system in place for that. BlackBerry data doesnt handle being switched on and off like other phones, you'd probably have to log in every time it got reconnected.

No they don't.
BB10 devices just use standard data and are subject to the same rules as Android & iPhones now.

Yup, as MI5 has stated, the BB10 devices just use standard data so are exactly the same as any other smartphone now.

You shouldn't need to login to anything should you ever find that your data allowance is maxed out and then re-instated after your billing period.

You are able to use BBM, email, etc with a WiFi only connection on a Z10.

The only thing to keep an eye on is the amount of data you are using. The old legacy devices that used BIS had all of their data compressed whereas BB10 devices don't. For instance in a typical month on my Bold 9900 using BIS my maximum data usage was around 60Mb, since moving to a Z10 without BIS I average around 500MB a month.

This sucks. My data is on <20MB and it wont be reset for almost 2 weeks. I'm still hoping it lets me use bbm when it runs out 😞 I'll post my findings anyway. Thanks.

Although regarding the logging in thing, you must have had to log in to your BlackBerry ID when you got your phone or made significant changes like replacing your SIM, changing data plans, etc. This has always been a feature.

I think it's quite fair really when you've run out of data you've run out no matter which phone you are using

On WiFi you'll be fine, just not on mobile data.

You can always buy an additional data bolton which would probably be worthwhile if you've still got over 2 weeks to go this month......
