Are you contract or PAYG?
If PAYG you need credit as they don't come out of allowances.
Can you send via iMessage over a data connection or wifi?

Until the networks take a look at the extortionate charges for sending poor quality images, it's hard to ever recommend using the mms service let alone using it myself.
A plethora of free options are now available, with WhatsApp being very popular.

Unfortunately, until everyone adopts the use of a smartphone, some have no choice.
I always send by any other means except to my Mother who still insists on using an old Nokia 3310.

And only when those users do adopt the smartphones, will the networks be forced to look at a new system rather than the rip off mms system in place.
