Your thoughts on the Google Nexus 4?

Hi guys,

I just read this article on our blog, about the Nexus 4:

More info

Nexus 4’s just been announced by Google and LG and we’re proud to say it’ll be launching on O2 on Tuesday 13 November. It’s the best of Google on a beautiful 4.7 inch screen and is the first phone to come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean installed. Plus, if you’re one of the first to get your hands on the Nexus 4 from O2, you’ll even get to buy it on the roof of The O2 and get a free LG TV too!

We’ll be selling it on our range of On & On Pay Monthly tariffs and it’ll be free on all tariffs from £36 a month up. Whichever On & On tariff you take, you’ll get unlimited calls and unlimited texts to anyone in the UK as well as 1GB of data.

General Manager of Devices for O2 in the UK, David Johnson:
“Nexus 4 has a crystal clear screen and our customers will love Android 4.2. It’s the best way to experience Android, whether you’re trying it for the first time or have used it before, and getting a free TV with a Nexus 4 is the absolute icing on the cake.”

On 13 November we’re having a very special launch event at our The O2 store in London. The first 20 people in the queue at 8am will get their Nexus 4 at our exclusive pop up store on the roof of The O2. You’ll get to break open your phone while you’re up there and be the first customers in the UK to use the Nexus 4 for a panoramic shot of London. Don’t worry if you’re not in the first 20 though – the first 50 people in the queue at 8am will get a free 32in flatscreen TV! Relax though – you don’t have to lug the TV through London as we’ll send it out to you 14 days after the launch.

Don’t live in London? No worries – we’re giving LG TVs away to those who buy their Nexus 4 from another O2 store, through our website or through our call centre too. Just tweet us @O2 with a picture of you and your new Nexus 4 and tell us why you’re excited about life using the hashtag #lifesgood. We’ll be watching out for people tweeting for the first couple of weeks and your pic could net you a new TV!

Looking forward to getting your hands on Nexus 4? Excited about everything on Android feeling even faster, more fluid and smoother than ever before? Let us know what does it for you in the comments below…

Some key features:

• Stunning 4.7" True HD IPS PLUS Display

• First phone with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

So, what are your thoughts on the device?

I'll be buying one.....from Google. I just saw this article at TechDigest saying you're claiming a network exclusive? What's that about? Google will be selling it unlocked. There are no benefits to buying from O2 that I can see, especially when you're already an O2 customer.

Google have put all the current leading phones to shame with what in most cases is a phone with much better specs for nearly half the price. My decision was between this and the Xperia T however this has much better specs and is a much better price. I'm an Android junky anyway and engage in open source development which is the point of the Nexus range and will be looking forward to building my own custom ROM as soon as source is released on the AOSP site.

All that remains to be seen is will O2 sim lock the phone as I would love to go pick one up on day one from a store however if it is sim locked I'll be buying it from the Play Store. Also they say you can get it on any On & On tariff but don't say you can have it if you are on any of the cheaper tariff's which I've just changed to.

If you're thinking about getting it on contract, really don't bother even if it takes you a month or more to save up you'll be much better off then paying £36 a month when you can have the phone on sim-only for a fraction of the cost.

except it is made by LG now, not Samsung.... I just hope LG quality has improved....
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

1 Month exclusivity to o2 and here is what you will pay...

£864 (2 years on the £36 a month tariff, and guessing the 8GB)

And if your not a moron this is what you will pay:

£480 (To buy the 8GB direct from google, GiffGaff sim £10 a month Ultd Txt and Data)

I love how o2 thinks it can charge soo much even tho the phone is half the price of other top of the range phones yet keep the same dam tariffs....

Sort it out o2, do a search and you will find people talking in discuss about what your doing here.

As soon as your 1 month exclusivity is over every other retailer will under cut you.

Not everyone can lay out that much in cash, so a contract will suit them better.

That doesn't make them morons! Smiley Frustrated

True, there are some who would prefer a contract but given the facts it still is rather expensive over a 2 year term if it is an 8GB version. Given the choice of what the target market is, you're into iPhone territory with a better resale value.

Serious competion for Nokia 820 though which I'm considering as well but think I might get the Nexus myself as it's priced right (sim-free) for my liking! Particularly interested in Google maps/traffic feature if it does work in the UK.

Poor storage space and no expandable memory rules it out completely for  me no matter how good it may be. 16gb is not nearly enough.

I did read somewhere that one of the reasons for not having an sd card slot apart from space is that they have to pay Microsoft for licensing the format (exFat or something) thus reducing the cost.

I can't seem to work out if it supports USB OTG. If it does then that's not too bad if you can use USB memory drives.
