Solved: APN Data problems for updated Sony Xperia S

Solved this myself with info gained off these boards.

 

Updated Xperia S was connecting to Access Point on the Pay Monthly Mobile Network, but not allowing any data through. Cleared and renewed the APN several times but still all data blocked.

 

Finally went into APN details and checked against details shown in posts on O2 Community. To do this yourself, start the Settings app then:

Under Wireless & Networks click More...

Click Mobile Networks then Access Point Names

O2 Mobileweb should be selected, click on it.

 

Everything looked fine apart from Authentication Type was shown as PAP. Boards suggested this should not be set so changed it. click on Auhentication Type brings up a list of options, including None. Select it then hit the Menu button and select Save.

 

That did the job. Not sure why the download settings set the Authentication to this, certainly doesn't seem to work on the Xperia S.

You can also use a wildcard (*) which will use whatever mode is suitable.

 

PAP and CHAP aren't all that different. PAP uses password authentication on a remote server whereas CHAP uses a Handshake to identify both devices on the network connection, a bit like a dial-up modem.  CHAP is slightly more secure as it challenges every request on the network wheras PAP will keep on trying until it gets the right password. An invalid response will send back a NAK response which means the server has rejected the request. Weeeee, I'm bored.
