I've checked and it is a monthly rolling airtime plan. Clicking info says it is a flex monthly tariff which can be changed once a month, so don't see that there would be a problem.

Yeah, I realise that. I could change my tariff on my iPhone X, but I would lose the ability to trade in after 12 months for a new device. I get that. Dunno how they could ask for the pencil back tho!

I did. There is no reference to changing of tariffs. Only things like if you send the ipad back without the free gift you will be charged retail price for the free gift.
