transfer from 12 to 14

my new iphone 14 pro has been saying trying to reconnect for 2 hours and the old iphone 12 is saying "waiting for software update.  Is this right?

Your iPhone 12 is wating for an update to be able to the transfer the files. Make sure the iPhone 14 Pro and  12 have been updated to the latest OS versions. 

It might also be worth reaching out to Apple Support to see if they know of any known issues

There was an article on How-to-Geek about this very subject yesterday. The advice is that whenever you are upgrading, make sure that both handsets are fully up to date before you link them and start to transfer files.
