upgrade phone

i have a pay as you go monthly contract which i just upgraded to a 2year contact that includes a phone upgrade. I planned to give this to my son to replace his old phone and continue to use my old phone with my contract. I would like to know 2 things, does the new phone i recieved need to be unlocked to do so or is it already locked to my o2 mobile number etc and if this is in fact the case how do i go about making sure i can still use my old phone with the account keeping my phone number etc. And 2.. if it isnt how do i go about setting the new phone so it is ready for my son to use with his sim card. Thank you.

Then you'll need to get your new phone unlocked by O2 but you'll have to use it yourself for a few days first.

Hi @Anonymous  and welcome to the forum,

The phone supplied will be locked to the o2 Network not your phone number and it will also let a giffgaff sim card be used.

You can however unlock it via the unlock form https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset%20Unlocking%20Form which is free.

So it depends on what Network your son uses.

When your son puts his sim card in the phone he should get set up texts from the network.
