registered PAYG sim life if unused.

Anonymous

Hi everyone.
What is the life of a registered PAYG sim if left unused?
My grandparents have a mobile for emergencys only which now shows no signal when switched on and as not recognised when rung.
I always thought it was after 3 months that the sim shut down but they rang me Christmas day off it so this can't be the case....
Luckily there wasnt much credit on it but i'd like to know for future so that i know and i can make a point of them using it more often!
Thanks for your help.

You need to make one call every 6 months to keep it active.

6 months? How strange! It's deffo switched off. I've put my card
in their phone and theirs in mine and the issue is the card
After I posted this I wondered if it was my birthday they
rang me on but that is November so still within that time.
It wouldn't have been topped up for over a year tho.
I guess this wouldn't matter?
For future ref does a text / internet data call count as usage?
Thanks again.

you do need to be sure when you last topped up. because PAYG requires a topup every1000 days and yes texts and data calls count as usage

All sorted by the o2 shop.
Apparently a chargeable phone call needs to be made every 6 months.
I guess they haven't used it in that time and I've only sent a text message each time I've checked it was still active.
They re connected it as well which I didn't think possible!
Cheers for the tips tho.
I've told them to use it once a month to be on the safe side.

Thanks for this. I believe it's totally unfair and 2 years would be a more reasonable time scale to leave your line unused. If you are in another country doing contract work it's really inconvenient to remember to use your UK line every 6 months. Although, admittedly, some countries will take your line away if not used for one or 2 months, so O2 are not as unreasonable as some cell networks.
