You will be credit checked for a phone contract.

There are ways to improve your credit rating, being on the Electoral Roll is almost a must, and living at the same address for about 3 years helps, there is a lot more info here:

You may be offered a sim only deal for a period of time before being considered for a contract phone. However, they may also ask for a deposit (and £300 is not unheard of) to cover the risk. You'll get it back obviously after you've proved yourself as a good payer. In my opinion, I would take that option even though its a big initial outlay. In the long run, it will benefit you.
Also it is advisable not to make too many applications for credit in a short period as it flags up as fraud.

I applied for a Sony Experia recently on a new contract (been with o2 on a p&g for 6 years) and they wanted a £150 deposit, refunded in 3 months.
That didn't happen as i don't have that sort of money.
Unbelievably, 3 months ago i got my son a galaxy S1 on contract, in my name, from Carphone Warehouse and wasn't asked for a deposit at all. Mind you, CW are considerably more expensive with their tariffs....
Why does one firm deal with it differently? Who knows grin

I found the opposite CW on o2 almost half the cost of o2 direct, echo vodaffone also cheaper via CW than voda direct.
CW own network cheaper still and they have more handsets to choose from
