Wanting to move number from O2 contract to another network mid-contract...

Not applicable

I've got two O2 contracts (one for sister lasts until June 2013, mine is 30 day sim only).  We are both in my Family Group with our mum also, which used to help keep costs down... but this month the voice charges halfway through the month are over £50 above normal, as the connection between O2 mobiles has been very poor within Sheffield for some time, and they can't make calls reliably on it.

Therefore, my sister has had to use her 200 minute allowance on calling the landline instead, and unwittingly has now gone significantly over her allowance, and each call to anyone is costing 35p a minute.  I only noticed it by chance a day ago.

That's the background to the question...!  So we have a Virgin Media landline phone, and I want to put her onto a Virgin mobile contract so she can call the landline and vice versa free.

What I would like to know is can I move her mobile number on her O2 contract onto a new Virgin Pay  Monthly contract, while there's still around 7 months left on it? I am not trying to get out of the contract (I can use it myself and then cancel it next June, and look again at a more appropriate tariff).  She needs to keep her number as it's used by so many people.  She had originally moved it from O2 PAYG to PAY Monthly in June as we thought the contract would be worthwhile, but it's just too limited, and the reception is so poor for O2 where she is.

I think in order to do that, she would have to buy out the remaining contract.  I think it is the price per month x the 7 months remaining minus VAT as far as I know.  You could phone Customer Service and they might give you the correct figure.  Then just order a PAC code and then give the PAC code to her new provider and the number remains with her.

Having said all that I am not sure how Family Groups work, so not sure if that has any bearing on cost or contract, but I shouldn't think so.

Thanks for that - might just let her run the contract out a bit further then, and get a Virgin PAYG sim for her old phone (so we can call from the landline free if needed).

That is prob the best option.  If you check your MyO2 it should give you the date for renewing, you may even be able to cancel a month earlier for free.
