Upgrading phone

All I want to do is keep my existing plan (which is bare minimum - 2GB data, free texts, not extras: £12 a month) but get a new phone. Yet when I try the upgrade plans it's locking me into payments over years and with a minumum of 5GB data, which I'm sure is more expensive.

Can I just get a new phone, put my existing SIM in it and continue as normal?

You can't just get a phone from O2 without getting a new tariff. You need to buy the phone outright from anywhere and just put your sim in that to keep number and tariff @Nikko

You can buy a phone outright without upgrading and put your exisiting sim into it and continue with your current plan, if you upgrade you will need to choose a new plan.
