when I was on sim only I was getting 2g data unlimited minutes unlimited texts and since I've upgraded to a handset I only get 1g of data but I am paying more than £12 how can this be "paying handset £7 a month and insurance
£5 a month separately from tariff"

Sim only is always cheaper.

Don't ask me why, it's just O2's business model.
