No credit check for an upgrade however you do start your new commitment again.
I used myself before and went straight through as a normal upgrade just the early fee gets waived off as your giving the phone back.
had this confirmed by O2 mods on here too

From the T&C's:
Are there any restrictions?
You need to have Switch Up either as part of a Plus Plan (at no extra cost) or with any other Custom Plan (for an additional monthly cost). It’s not available with sim only plans.
Your current phone also needs to be in good enough nick – meeting our grading criteria – and your account with us can’t be in arrears. Upgrades may be subject to passing a credit/fraud check.

and:
Taking out any new Custom Plan or Plus Plan will be subject to status, credit checks and payment by direct debit as well as being subject to availability.
