You will still get charged for sending texts or making calls.
Live chat can turn off the travel bolt on for you http://www.o2.co.uk/contactus

You can also text if in UK but it won't work from abroad.

Opting out of O2 Travel
If you decide that O2 Travel is not right for you, you can opt out by texting NOTRAVEL to 23336.

If you want to opt-out, you can do so by texting “NOTRAVEL” to 23336. It can take up to 24 hours for O2 Travel to be removed from your account. This has to be done whilst in the UK though...

You can ask customer service to turn off travel for you http://www.o2.co.uk/contactus but you only pay for the days you use your phone, so to avoid, turn on airplane mode and then enable WiFi to use any free WiFi hotspots.

No, if you do exactly that you won't get charged at all.

However, if you want to receive or send texts then just switch off mobile/cellular data and data roaming so you can use your phone just as a phone and leave wifi on. You will then only pay for any texts you send. Don't answer any calls.

You can of course simply remove the sim card and then there is no possibility of charges though you need to put it in a safe place such as your suitcase, preferably in an envelope.

Calls and texts will still trigger the daily travel fee though so that won’t stop the charges completely.

Of course, I just wanted to point out an alternative should they want to receive texts from home which are free to receive anywhere.
