Hi there,

I am currently on an 18 month contract with my iPhone; is it possible to cancel after 12 months?

Yes but you'll have to pay 6x your monthly fee as a lump sum.

Very true. I understood though that they would take a lump sum but the account would then be terminated - ie you're no longer an o2 customer. This prevents people paying off the minimum term to get to an upgrade or whatever.

But there is no way of terminating after 12 months, avoiding the lump sum fee and simply having the phone number disconnected from O2 (so that the phone no longer works)?

No.

You signed up to an 18 month contract and you are legally obligated to fulfil that term. Unless o2 agree to let you pay the remainder.
