@Annettemarie If you and the people you want to talk to in the US download WhatsApp, Skype, or Facebook Messenger you can talk, have video calls and send messages absolutely free if you use the apps over WiFi.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

If you wish to make normal calls, you need the international bolt on https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/international/the-international-bolt-on
