Samsung J3 2016 running out of storage

My J3 has become almost unusable. I can’t use it any longer for emails and I have constant “storage full” messages.  O2 shop staff tell me it is due to Samsung automatic updates hogging all the memory, and the impossibility of transferring data to SD card. They have a vested interest in selling a replacement, but I would prefer to get it working again.  Any clues?

@Fondation

In this case they are being honest with you.

Your phone has very limited storage capacity and is now old so an upgrade is probably the best choice.

Yes, you can add an SD but only for photos and videos. The problem is the apps taking all the space. After the partition for the operating system there's only around 3gb left usable.
