You can only connect to the wi-fi hotspots listed as O2, they have a blue landing page and you only enter your MBB sim card number, there are no other log in details.

You can as you probably know connect free to any of these while in credit.
Some hotspots are BT Fon, and many are privately owned, but still show as BT Openzone.
O2 are also setting up free wi-fi for everyone later this year:

The network is labeled
O2 UK Wi-fi (BT Openzone)
Are you saying what O2 say is free is labbeled differently?

No, it's confusing but you can only connect to the ones on the list above.

What did O2 say when you reported it?

Did you ever use a different device to connect to BT Openzone or The Cloud? If so you may need to reset your Mac address.
You can do this by texting the word Wi-Fi to 2121.
