VR stands for Virtual Reality. Which creates a virtual, simulated environment where people interact using devices such as the Meta Quest headsets. This creates scenes & objects that appear to be real, making the user feel they are immersed in their surroundings. VR can come in many forms:

Non-Immersive

More info
You interact with a virtual environment, usually through a computer. A great example of this is playing a standard video game on a console

Fully Immersive

More info
Gives users the most realistic simulation experience, complete with sight and sound. A common example of this is within a virtual gaming zone playing The Elder Scrolls.

Semi-Immersive

More info
Combines fully immersive and non-immersive virtual reality. The user will use a headset for visual VR, however there will be no physical motions. A virtual tour is an example of this type of experience.

Collaborative

More info
Different users, based in multiple locations can interact with each other in the form of avatars or 3D characters, completing tasks.

Augmented Reality

More info
This form involves real world environments & computer generated content. A great example is trying out some new clothes whilst sat in your bedroom.

Mixed Reality

More info
    • Full-colour pass through that blends virtual elements into your physical space for a new way to play, connect and explore like never before.

The early releases

More info

The first generation VR release from Meta, came in 2018 with the release of the Oculus Go. Using the Android operating system this was a standalone device providing downloadable games, apps & entertainment. It was estimated this device sold over 2 million units, providing a key stepping stone for future releases. Next up, the Oculus Quest was released in 2019, half a dozen cameras were added to the headset to track the users hand/body movement, allowing for this to be replicated in the Virtual world. This device was designing mainly for gaming with a superior screen, advanced tracking features and wireless set up.

Now lets see what was next....
