1) BATOLOGY is the study of plants such as blackberries
2) BRASS MONKEYS came from cannonballs on ships (I think)
3) PUFFINUS PUFFINUS....obviously sounds as if it's something to do with Puffins, though I have a feeling that's too damn obvious.

Ok, though my answer to number 3 is a pure guess. Without looking it up, it will stay the same I think.

Thanks for the answers so far.
A gentle reminder that the quiz does not close at midnight but is open until 12 noon tomorrow, Friday, so there is time for those who have given an answer to submit another set of answers, or for those who haven`t had a go, to submit their answers.

A1: ABATALOGY is what you got when you can't stand to be in the same place as a certain small winged mammal of the order Chiroptera, and your skin starts to itch, your eyes water and your breathing becomes laboured...
A2: A brass monkey was a device used to hold the cannon balls on a ship - as the balls were steel and the monkey was brass, when it got cold, the brass shrank more than the steel and all the balls would fall off.... hence "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey".
A3: The Puffinus puffinus is that particular species of bird that finds it hard to climb up those steep steps leading from the beach up to the car-park; commonly found in holes high up on said cliffs, these tailless creatures cut through water like a shark's dorsal fin through the mirror-like waters off the Great Barrier Reef.
Good quiz, who won?
