I know not many will remember him well but he gave half a century of his life to BBC Radio.

He was consistently pulling in over 5,000,000 listeners but BBC decided they wanted a younger image....

They tried to sideline him into weekend slots but he was having none of it.

In 2002 he decided to leave. Many listeners were outraged. He was, at the time, more popular than Terry Wogan.

This article from 2002, gives info about the furore when he decided to leave the BBC...It was a sad end for him

Very sad but he had a long sucessful career and I often tuned into to his radio programmes. Not many know that he was a popular recording artist before he moved into broadcasting. RIP Sir Jimmy slight_frown

I liked him singing The Man From Laramie & Unchained Melody

His Radio 2 show was a favourite, particularly the consumer info, 'What's the recipe today Jim', the MOR Middle of the Road music he played ... I can't really remember the political interviews he did, but according to the link @Cleoriff put up, he had a soft exterior & asked questions the ordinary man in the street would wish to ask

RIP Sir Jimmy Young

It seems that all the crooners in the 50s sang cowboy songs as nearly every film made was a western. I loved that period in all honesty,my choice of reading was always westerns in those days, hell,  I wanted to be a cowboy when I grew up.....maybe that was why I chose being a motor mechanic as my profession LOL
