Seems pretty sensible if you're a criminal.

If there's a chance that the Police will get hold of your device, why take the chance of incriminating yourself ?

To be honest, if I had any of my devices taken from me by the police, sending a wipe request to them remotely would be the first thing I'd do as soon as I had a chance regardless of wether I had commited a crime or not!

I'm sure that would just increase suspicion that there was something to hide and trigger a deeper investigation.
