European phones will work fine in UK even if region locked.
It's Asian or USA phones that need using with a local sim first.
Anyway, this only applies to Samsung and there's nothing to say the op has a Samsung phone?

Don't regional phones require they are used with a sim card from that region for a minimum period before they can be used in other regions. I say this because my old A3 which i got SIM free was european region and to be used in any other regions 5 mins of calls had to be made with an European sim card.

I'd go with @MI5's thinking on this. Was it bought on eBay?

Yes I had to use my Note 4 for 10 minutes of UK calls before it would work with a Thai sim card and vice versa when I purchased the Note 2 in Thailand.

Send it to someone in Asia and ask them to use it for 5 mins of calls.
Maybe @jonsie will take it to Thailand for you wink
