I use a pay n Go sim so I don't lose my credit if I hadn't used it each month. My phone is also only used in an Emergancy

That's the way to go. I always kept a P&G phone in the glovebox as backup especially as my wife used to do most of the driving. Also there for when I worked nights.

But if thats all you need a phone for then fair enough. There's no 'one size fits all'....

Currently the classic PAYG tariff is the only one that retains your top up as credit.
