Back your phone up to iTunes or icloud and they will always be there for reference.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

Certainly no expert on this... but it appears it can be done by saving to a PC using a programme called Touchcopy https://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/features/features_messages.php?gclid=CKvSraK92NECFdQ_Gwo...

Most likely other programmes work too but iTunes is prob the best one to use.

As long as you do regular backups to iTunes you can restore them anytime even if you accidently delete them after the backup.

If you don't mind shelling out £4.99 there is an app that seems to do the trick if you want to store them on your PC/Mac

If you want them on another phone quickly that isn't Apple just forward them to the other phone.
