If I upgrade my sim only contract do i have to use the new sim that is sent?

No you can keep the same sim. The tariff will just be updated. If you don't have a 4G sim it's best to change but if you aren't changing phone just keep the sim as a spare.

I started a new contract a couple of weeks ago...kept the sim I had for the last 2 years.

Useful as a spare just in case your sim ever fails or if you want to change phones in the future.
