O2 locked sim - paid full contract and cancelled sim plan

I’ve relocated to Australia with my iPhone 7 which I own outright, initially bought from o2. I had cancelled my airtime plan with them effectively 5th September 2019 so am technically no longer a customer. When I called them last month to cancel this and pay off my contract nobody mentioned me needing to request unlocking my phone.

Anyway here I am in Australia unable to put in an Optus SIM card, and technically I’m not an o2 customer anymore to call them (have no working roaming) so how on earth do I go about this one?

Feel like I’ve been well and truly mugged off by o2!!

The unlock process is explained here Guide: Unlocking an O2 phone to use a different SIM card 

It should be very straightforward for O2 to unlock your iPhone for you..

If you get any more obstacles I'll ask @EmilieT to help.

Also the online form for unlocking is not working for me!
