Hi,
Settings,General,About is where the serial number is.
You can check its warranty status by inputting the hardware seial number here
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
There are websites that check the imei for you for a small fee.
A simple google will show these up.
I would get a nano sim asap from an 02 shop and try it out to ensure its not blacklisted but of course you are taking the risk of the owner registering it as lost or stolen to claim on insurance.
It doesn't always happen though so try not to worry.
Did you get the original receipt or a bill of sale to show ownership ?

You are right to be concerned, we see quite a few cases of iPhones being blocked after sale on Ebay.
I would never buy a high value second hand phone this way.
I hope this is a good one and you have no problems with it, if you had asked here before buying the consensus would have been not to go ahead.

^^ This.
We've all come across people who have been burned in such circumstances.
