I use an app called Hushed so I can text with my Mom in America. You can get a number in the specified country. It works awesome. It's cheap too. Btw they don't need to install the app to send or receive texts to/from you.

Wait, I take that back. I am part of the phone app beta (I wanted the dark mode), I totally forgot about that. So maybe you're right and google snuck in some fixes in there too.

I checked it a couple days ago and it still wasn't working, so maybe they put in a call to google to fix the phone app? Dunno. It's working now, which is pretty cool.
