But discounts can only be applied to contracts within a certain time frame of contract being taken out... so basically we could end up with a 36 month contract without the discounts for the whole term.

First time I have considered buying a new phone at time of launch as I’m actually needing an upgrade but unfortunately it looks like after 15 years of being with o2, I’ll now be better off going sim only with another provider and buying the handset directly from Apple as at least I will know how much I’ll be paying prior to pre-order date.

If you can wait a couple of months then you can get the discount, but if you need the phone now it is a little more difficult...

That rule does NOT apply to iPhones. You will still get the discount, they usually open it up 3 months after the phone's release. (Avoiding the 28 day rule)

Just remember everyone, please pay attention to the delivery date quoted to you during your pre-order and checkout journey. This will be displayed in several locations (see FAQ's on page 1) and is what we'll be aiming to stick to for your order based on the delivery forecasts we've received from Apple. If during pre-order it shows 'delivery within 2 weeks', then that will be 2 weeks from launch day and you'll only receive an update once your order has dispatched, so don't be concerned if you get to day 13 and haven't heard anything, for example.

Another reminder that Apple made a bold decision to remove the charger and earphones from the box, and as this will bring environmental benefits, it’s a decision we support. The iPhone 12 is compatible with your existing Lightning cables and USB-A wall chargers. Think, i may wait simply for O2 open!

This will be the first iPhone in a number of years that I'm not ordering on pre-order day (I currently have a iPhone XS!) mainly due to the O2 Open exclusion

Even tempted to jump ship as voda actually looks slightly cheaper (with similar network coverage and free roaming in SOUTH Africa!)
