It's not compulsory and you should get better coverage on 2G and 3G as this rolls out.

Rang up o2 and the advisor didn't have anything in concrete for exisiting customers but basically said that my £32 tariff I'm on atm will give me the same data 1Gb and I can pay £5 for 3Gb, if that's the case these tariff's aren't as good as I intially thought!

Well there's no information there for customers already with a 4G phone and 4G SIM, the only options seem to be buy out of current contract for 4G refresh, or take out a SIMplicity 4G Tariff and move the old SIM to a different phone.

As data is a bolton perhaps you will just need to swap to a 4g data bolton (only time will tell)

So it's vodafone or 3 for the basic package, as long as the signal is ok. O2's basic package with 1GB of data is not competitive. Shame.
The coverage offered by O2 may make them the solution for many people, it's not always about price.

As always, go with the best coverage at home, work and yourlocale. Price is a factor but as others have found out to their cost, coverage is the most important.
