@Marjo- chestnuts taste sweet, with a texture a bit like marzipan paste. Called Kastanien or Maronen in Germany, not sure if that helps where you are?

 

Picture shows one after roasting, and one that has been removed, hot and steaming, from its shell or husk after roasting.

Yeah, kastanja! grin We have those where I'm from, however I just cannot remember ever tasting them for some reason. I wonder if they are the same ones I used to throw around at the school yard as it was surrounded by trees that dropped these...

The schoolyard conker is the inedible, some say poisonous, horse-chestnut, @Marjo. Apparently good for putting on your windowledge to banish spiders, or so the old wives' tale goes...

Depends if the shell was smooth or spiky Majo?
Smooth shelled ones are not for eating.
