notification screen keeps dropping down obscuring phone even when no notifications

You would normally have to slide down from the top of the screen to display the notification bar.
If the phone is doing this by itself you can try rebooting to see if it helps or speak to the phones manufacturer if it's not something that you are influencing.

Many thanks for your response. After weeks of being irritated by the problem I decided to speak to O2, all they said was 'send it in for repair'! Not liking that idea I searched further on this site and tried a suggested solution of turning off finger sensor gestures. Tried it and HALLELUJAH! - problem solved! I feel a bit of an idiot now for not discovering the issue earlier.🙄
