If I am in a dead spot in the house, callers often get a recording says "your call cannot be connected at this time", or after dialling my number they get nothing at all. Sometimes it does actually go to voicemail and allow a message to be left. What's the cause of this? It happens with two different mobile phones.

Do you have WiFi calling capability, @RogerDodger?
If so, use it so your domestic "dead" spot still has a signal to carry the call to you (or back out to voicemail, if necessary).

Check your call diverts in your MyO2 and make sure that unanswered and unreachable are both set to divert to voicemail.

If not already selected make sure your WiFi Calling is set to WiFi Preferred. That will keep it locked on at home

Only an option on Android phones.
