PAYG sim has been deactivated???

Hello, I had a phone number which was admittedly inactive for a prolonged period of time with a desired easy to remember number. I now would like to use it but the SIM is no longer active in my phone? 

Is there anyway for me to retrieve my number or is it gone forever???

If it hasn't been used or topped up, it's probably been reassigned by now @IsaacStaffy 

Give o2 a call on 4445 and see what they say,

The only other phone number I have is on Vodafone and it won't let me get through on that number. 

Is there any other phone numbers I can use to get though?
