How To Activate A New Sim ?

Like many others, I have had to update my ancient mobile (12 yrs old.) due to 3G being phased out.

But I want to keep my existing number.

So I bought a smart phone and went to my local O2 shop who put a Sim card with my existing number into my new phone.   I was told to wait 24 hours when my old phone would go dead and my new phone would activate.

36 hours later = nothing.  My old phone was still working and the new phone still 'dead.'

So - back to the shop (a 40 minute journey) and explain the situation.  After much tapping of computers, the very helpful assistant said the problem was solved and the new phone would be active in a few hours.         O2 even sent a message to my old phone confirming the Sim Swap request and completion asap.                Two days later = nothing.  Old phone still working.  New phone still dead.

So onto the website and 'speak' to an AI assistant who couldn't help so told me to ring 4442.   Once there, I spoke to 'Throy' who told me the O2 shop couldn't do what they said as the new SIM card with my number has to come from customer service and be activated by them.  So - the card should arrive by Wednesday and once it is in my phone everything will work ok.  If not I have to call 4442 to activate it.   So that is where I am at.           BUT - I have that all too familiar 'doom laden' feeling that I have been sent up a blind alley and my new phone is not going to work and I call 4442 and have to go through the entire process all over again.        In short - Does anybody know how to activate a new Sim Card ?                                                                          PS.  I am on Pay As You Go (about £20 a year !!)  But I have read on here that new sim cards can't be used with Pay As You Go.  Surely that can't be true.

@mayflye

You'll just need to trust in the process as nothing can be done from here, sorry.

You can , however, sim swap yourself Guide: Sim Swap: a mini guide 2017 update

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
Please select the post that helped you best and mark as the solution. This helps other members in resolving their issues faster. Thank you.

If your old sim is still active then do the sim swap via the process in the link above

Otherwise you will need to wait

You need the old sim active to process the swap
