Hi my son didn’t want a phone for his 1st phone but instead an Apple Watch SE (GPS/Cellular).  A more expensive option I know but Ive set up refurbished iPhone 8 with 02 (£8 per month) with unlimited texts / calls and 5GB data to support the watch but it will obviously stay at home whilst he is at school.  At 02 they said to call Customer Services to add a £5 data plan for the watch prior to Christmas so everything would work when he paired them both on the big day.  Talking to Customer Services today, they said I needed a call plan for the watch too - is this correct?  I understood it took on the services of the paired iPhone?  HELP. very untechnical mum!  Thank you.

@TeresaM

You need the Apple Watch Plan which adds data, and uses the minutes from your airtime, this is £5 per month on top of the £8

Bare in mind the only caveat is it wont work with Pay As You Go, only pay monthly

Full information is here :

Apple Watch | Help & Support | O2

- Xperia 1V - o2 and Spusu
- Pixel 8 Pro - o2 and Vodafone UK

No you only need a data plan for the watch

You set it up via the watch but you will need an esim for the watch

As long as you have a monthly sim for the phone and a £5 data plan for the watch you will be good to go

Get an esim from the O2 store

The watch already has an eSim in it as part of the firmware. You just need to activate it:

Set up the data plan from the watch setup routine and it will walk you through buying an airtime plan.
https://www.o2.co.uk/help/phones-sims-and-devices/apple-watch
Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap on ‘Mobile Data’.
Then tap ‘Set up mobile data’. You’ll be prompted to sign in with your My O2 username and password.
Once you’ve signed in, select your Apple Watch plan. Follow the steps on the screen to set up your Apple Watch Airtime Plan.
It can take up to 24 hours to activate, but sometimes it might take a little longer.
To check if your new Airtime Plan is active, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap on ‘Mobile Data’. In the ‘Data Plan’ section, if you see O2 with the word ‘activating’ then you’ll have to wait a little longer for set up to complete. If you see O2 with an orange ‘i’ next to it, then you’re all set up.
If you get an error message at any point, on the iPhone, go to Settings and select Privacy > Motion & Fitness and switch it on.
Then go back to the watch app/Mobile Data/set up mobile data plan and be ready to put your o2 username and password in to the resulting o2 screen. Also, it costs £5 monthly to add the airtime for the Apple Watch, so you'll need to authorise this after entering the o2 user name and password. The phone app will then say 'activating' which can take a day or so, but at that point, you can try doing a phone call direct from the watch to test it.

It's just the typical upselling tactics now that call centres are merged with Virgin @TeresaM

It's despicable and underhand.
