Hello. have today received an email from O2 advising me that "after the 3G switch off you may experience a drop in call quality and be unable to access call data, including the internet and messaging apps like Whats App". I have checked the Martin Lewis Moneyexpert website and he advises that my Samsung Galaxy A20e phone does support 4G but does not support 4G calling which means that I will still be able to get full internet access, phone calls and text but that phone calls will be of poorer quality as they will be using 2g.
The 02 email gives the overall impression that I will not be able to access the internet and messaging apps and that I will have no alternative but to buy a new 4G or5G phone, Martin Lewis gives the impression that I can continue using my phone and that the only downside will be with phone calls.
I am a very light phone call user making no more than 8 - 10 calls a month so I am not really bothered about call quality although I use the Internet, emails, text and Whats App frequently.
Could anyone clarify the exact technical position please - do I really need to buy a new phone or is is just O2 marketing trying to persuade me to get one?
Thankyou.
Neil Scarlett

Won't be an issue for you at all.

Now this text for me
We've started switching off our 3G network, and we'll continue to switch off areas across the UK throughout 2025.
For more information on how this affects you and what you need to do to continue getting the best from O2 please see our FAQs.

Thankyou very much to everyone who has replied to my question. My phone has a Volte option which according to the internet allows 4G telephone calling. As far as I can see therefore my phone will not be affected in any way by the loss of 3G, which is not what 02 have told me. I intend to take no action and see what else happens.
Thanks again. For information I live in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

VoLTE provides both 4g and wifi calling so as said, you will be fine with nothing to worry about.

@NEIL6PG There is a simple way to see if 4G calling is active.
Make sure the phone is on 4G at the top. Looking at the screen make a call. Voicemail will do, and listen to the menu. If the phone stays on 4G you are good to go. 4G calling is working

VoLTE doesn't provide either 4G or WiFi-calling.
VoLTE is the technology which allows voice calls over a 4G network. Without it, a 4G phone will use 2G or 3G for calls.
WiFi-calling does not use 4G. If you want to express it in a shorthand, it is VoWiFi.
