If your sim fits in your new phone you could just pop it in there...otherwise your phone will come with a new sim and you need a sim swap

An upgrade automatically retains your current number if done through O2.
If you buy a phone from somewhere else you can use your current sim (which will retain your current tariff and number or get a free sim swap from any O2 shop.
