i have broken my phone and i need to upgrade as i need my phone for university and work any chance ican upgrade without paying the balance

If your cost to upgrade is too great, @zimbotrade, you could also purchase a second-hand phone that will do until your upgrade is due, but upgrading again to get a new phone, if you are less than half way through your contract could be prohibitively expensive.

As @Cleoriff notes above, reach out to O2, see if they can offer you a part-used or refurbished phone - but you may find a high-street retailer, CEX, offers better value. Don't forget to check that your SIM will fit properly in any replacement phone you are considering, and make sure the replacement is not locked to a different carrier than O2.
