trying to top up new phone

I've just purchased a new Nokia Lumier phone with new sim card. I've tried to add credit twice and been told there's a problem and I can't get the credit onto the phone to start using it. Can anyone advise me please?

Are you trying to top up with your card on the phone or via the O2 website?

Have you changed your number when you got a new phone? Sometimes you can't use a card to top up other mobile numbers (i think 2 or 3).
