I'm going on holiday to the Gambia in January.
Texts from my O2 mobile to the UK are going to cost 50p each (I think).
Is there a cheaper way?

Any wfi based apps such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Skype, Messamger. So many of the. However there is no cheaper way of sending standard texts.

As @jonsie says, there is nothing available which would ease the 'pain' of these costs @stevetheadi

Just make sure you use WiFi as much as possible. Ask friends and family to also have the apps that can be used to connect with you.
Turn Voicemail off before you go...

I use an app called Hushed so I can text with my Mom in America. You can get a number in the specified country. It works awesome. It's cheap too. Btw they don't need to install the app to send or receive texts to/from you.

I have just checked out Hushed, which shows it originates in the US.
It is available to download from iTunes or Google play but it's not clear whether it will work from Gambia? (they don't the countries it can be used in. It says 45 but doesn't give you a list)
Thanks for the heads up though. I'm sure it will be useful to a lot of people
